MEET AL LEMMO
Al Lemmo is a longtime community advocate, engineer, and public servant with deep roots in Metro Detroit. For more than a decade, he served on the board of Wayne County West Right to Life, Lifespan of Metro Detroit, where he helped lead Dearborn’s successful effort to pass the 1988 statewide referendum ending taxpayer‑funded abortions. He participated in numerous pro‑life initiatives across the region, supported Randall Terry’s 2012 effort to target swing states, and has consistently promoted his model for confronting human‑rights abuses and advancing platform‑driven political strategy.
A seasoned mechanical engineer, Lemmo spent over thirty years with the U.S. Army’s Tank‑Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) in Warren. His work included coordinating high‑level Army and Navy reviews at the Pentagon, briefing at the Assistant Secretary of Defense level, contributing to BRAC 95 evaluations, and helping shape TARDEC’s long‑term science and technology strategy. He also served as TARDEC’s coordinator for the Army’s largest procurement program, the Ground Combat Vehicle. Earlier in his career, he conducted automotive safety research at Ford Motor Company and worked in systems engineering at Union Carbide on advanced wastewater treatment technologies.
Lemmo is a distinguished graduate of Union College, earning two degrees with honors in 1974. He was the only member of his class elected to both Tau Beta Pi and Phi Beta Kappa, an uncommon dual recognition. His academic work produced published research on computer‑aided design of prosthetic aortic valves. Since retiring in 2010, he has completed multiple intensive seminars at Hillsdale College.
His volunteer service spans decades and communities. Lemmo has promoted Braver Angels’ mission to reduce political polarization, served as an active member and two‑time Outstanding Member of the Year in the Catholic Alumni Club of Detroit, and tutored Detroit students and adults in math, chemistry, and literacy. A Republican precinct delegate for roughly twenty‑five years, he has held local party leadership roles, worked on numerous campaigns, and served as a poll challenger. He has also spent over twenty years as a St. Vincent de Paul home visitor, participated in prison ministry at Milan Federal Correctional Institution and the Wayne County Jail, and attended countless seminars on faith, politics, and the right‑to‑life movement. He is also an eleven‑gallon blood donor.
